Boys Varsity Tennis Fall to Quakers

Rye Boys Varsity Tennis fell to the Quakers of Horace Greeley at Disbrow Park on Friday 3 – 4.

“Without their number one singles player, Rye fought hard against Horace Greeley who had their full squad and then some,” said Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Sue Dickson. “Losing 4-3 it was a very close match up.”

Rye sported their 2023 line up for singles with Nicolas Echlov at one, Alex Gordon at 2, and Matthew Templeman at the 3 spot. Greeley had depth at the single and won all three points. The doubles teams had hard fought matches with exciting points.

With Greeley up 3-1, Rye had three matches on that could clinch the match. Fourth doubles, newcomers Marcos Becker and Timothy Morrell won handily 6-1, 6-2 in their second varsity match and their first in the Power League. Ty Bibas and Luke Gordon stayed strong at third doubles winning 6-0, 7-5.

The first doubles duo of Filip Glitterstam and Lou Kim-Reuter won an exciting match filled with great net play. They were down 4-6 in the first set and rallied back to take the second set 6-2. They then proceeded to win a close super tiebreaker 11-9.

Matthew Templeman had the come back match of the season being down one set 6-0 and being behind in the second 3-0. He clawed his way back to win the second set 6-4 with both spectating teams going wild for every shot. They played a super-tiebreaker for the third set and Henry Xue from Horace Greeley squeaked out the win 10-7 in the super-breaker. It was a remarkable match. Although defeated, Rye stayed positive despite some controversies. The unity of this group of players is growing every match.

The Garnets are now 3 – 2 for the season. Varsity faces Mamaroneck at Flint Park on Monday at 4:30pm.
