The Rye Varsity Boys Tennis team’s push for the Sectional Team Tennis Tournament championship ended on Thursday, as the Garnets dropped their matchup against the Scarsdale Raiders 4-0. Rain later in the day interrupted several matches, but there were enough decisive matches to crown a winner.

The top doubles team of Alex Gordon and Matthew Templeman lost a tough super tie-breaker to drop their matchup, and the third team of Henry Bagley and Henry Paul won their second set 6-4, but lost a tiebreaker “third set” 10-3. Fourth doubles Luke Gordon and Ty Bibas had their match ended early after taking the first set 7-5.

Coach Sue Dickson was proud of her team’s effort, saying they “fought valiantly against the strongest team in the league.” Despite the 4-0 defeat, Dickson felt the individual games were significantly closer than the final score indicates.

This marks the end of the team’s season. The Garnets finish a very successful 2024 campaign with a 10-4 record.

Several players on the roster will still have one more chance to compete in the Individual Section Tournament. Per Dickson, “Rye has entered three singles players, Henry Groves, Luke Gordon, and Lou Kim-Reuter” in the singles section. Duos of Nicolas Echlov/Filip Glitterstam, Gordon/Templeman, and Bagley/Paul will also compete as partners. This event kicks off at 8:00am on Saturday. As Dickson told MyRye.com, “Rye will continue to compete with the best of the best.”
