Boys Varsity Tennis Invaded by the Raiders of Scarsdale
Rye Boys Varsity Tennis was invaded by the Raiders of Scarsdale on Wednesday, coming up short at home, 2 – 5.
The faceoff against Scarsdale at the home Disbrow courts was a battle in many matches. Henry Groves won a hard fought first set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker vs. Sam Saeed and then closed it out with strength 6-0. Nicolas Echlov lost at second singles and Gunnar Wey lost as well, stepping in at the third singles spot for his first singles match.
Rye hoped to win the overall match in the doubles, however they came up short. First doubles, Matthew Templeman and Alex Gordon, lost the first set, crawled back, only to lose it 6-8 in a second set tiebreaker. Filip Glitterstam and Lou Kim-Reuter lost at second doubles 6-4, 1-6, (6-10) in the super tiebreaker. Third doubles came on strong and had aggressive net play and won significantly 6-4, 6-2. The fourth doubles team of Luke Gordon and Ty Bibas started out strong with a first set 6-4, struggled a little in the second set, losing that 6-7 (1-7) in a tiebreaker. The match went to a super tiebreaker for the “third set” and lost 3-10.
“These matches were true heartbreakers,” said Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Sue Dickson. “Rye hopes to build on this match to develop more strength with the tight matches. Currently, Scarsdale is the best team in the league. Rye certainly gave them a challenge that was more competitive than the score reflects.”
The Garnets are now 5 – 3 for the season. Varsity hosts Byram Hills on Friday at 4:30pm.
