The Rye Boys Varsity Tennis team defeated Clarkstown South 5-2 on Tuesday, improving to 10-3 on the season and knocking the Vikings out of the Sectional Team Tennis Tournament. The Garnets entered the day as the three seed in the tournament, and will move on to face Scarsdale in the second round. This will be the third meeting of the year between the crosstown rivals, with Rye looking to claim its first win, and a trip to the finals on the line.

Henry Groves was the only Garnet to win a singles match against Clarkstown South, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-3. Ollie Lincoln lost in his first singles match of the season, but Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Sue Dickson sang his praises, noting the senior “welcomed the challenge” and that he ” is a true competitor”.

The doubles segment is where Rye shined, sweeping the Vikings. Alex Gordon and Matthew Templeman won their match 6-4, 6-4. Dickson was very proud of the rest of her doubles team, noting how they “won easily, giving up only three games in total for the three matches.” Four of Rye’s five wins came in the doubles format.

The Garnets’ match against Scarsdale will take place today, Wednesday, weather permitting.
