It will be the third consecutive year a Miller captains the Rye varsity football team when the program begins play in the fall of 2024. However, older brother AJ is passing the torch to his younger brother Carson, a junior in Rye’s Class of 2026.

“[I am] grateful to be named captain as a junior for the 2024 Garnet Football Season,” Carson said in an X post on July 15.

“So excited for him to tear it up this fall,” AJ, the last Garnet to serve as captain as a junior, added.

Carson has some big shoes to fill – Rye is coming off its first state championship since 2008, and the roster is set to look significantly different in 2024-25. He is a rare case of a junior captain – normally, this honor is reserved for seniors, but both AJ and now Carson are exceptions to that precedent thanks to their quality leadership.

”During preseason commitments, Carson was there leading the team,” Head Coach Dino Garr said to MyRye.com on Tuesday night, speaking about his decision. “It was essential that his leadership was excellent.”

Garr spoke very highly of his rising junior on numerous occasions, making a special note of Miller’s great determination and competitiveness. He and his coaching staff have been impressed with Miller’s commitment to football, especially during summer workouts, as a multi-sport athlete.

Before AJ and Carson, Steve Miller (father) captained the Rye football team in the early years of Garr’s tenure as head football coach. Carson becomes the third to captain the Garnets from the family in Garr’s coaching career.
