Boys Varsity Soccer Wins Against Pelham
Rye Boys Varsity Soccer won their game against Pelham 2–0 today, September 28. So far this season, Rye Boys Varsity Soccer has 8 wins and 2 losses.
Coach Jared Smalls celebrated the players’ success: “This was a quality win against an opponent that can be difficult to play against. In wet and windy conditions, we did a good job trying to dictate the game and succeeded at doing so when it counted. It was great to see Martin Fields put in a strong performance and earn the clean sheet in goal, and it was great to have Jack Gilroy––a fantastic captain and leader––return from a significant injury to play the full 80 minutes and lead us to a win.”
Other game highlights:
- Kaden Zion opened the scoring in the 25th minute by converting a penalty kick. The sequence leading up to the penalty kick began when center back Zac Ramsey won a header at midfield. Karol Mendoza received Ramsey’s header on the half turn, and played a well-weighted through ball to Zion, who streaked in towards the goal before being fouled in the box. Zion’s goal was his 11th of the season.
- Five minutes later, Lex Cox headed in a corner that was served in by Shun Nagata to double the lead at 2–0.
- Martin Fields earned the clean sheet in goal, making 3 saves and dealing confidently with a number of set pieces and long throw-ins on a blustery, wet afternoon.
- Andrew Chun, Fin Kearney, and Liam Harrington all put in strong shifts at the forward position to help the Garnets secure the league win.
