Keeping It Clean @ Bird Homestead & Meeting House Conservancy
This past Saturday saw a raft of volunteers working on a fall cleanup at the Bird Homestead & Meeting House Conservancy on Milton Road. The effort was part of a multijurisdictional clean up across the City of Rye, Rye Town, Rye Brook, Port Chester and Mamaroneck. The Bird was the focus of efforts in the City of Rye.
What did these volunteers do to clean up the Bird?
- Removed all visible tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), an aggressive invasive plant and a primary food source for lantern flies
- Removed wisteria. Both Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) (more common in this area) and Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) are aggressive invasives.
- Came by canoe to remove debris in the water and marsh grasses.
- Attached a spotted lantern fly net to a tree
- Freshened up planters at the meeting house
- Fall cleaning inside The Meeting House
- Bagged leaves and sticks
