Rye Football Overcomes 14-Point Deficit to Win Week 0 Matchup Against Msgr. Farrell
The Varsity football season did not start as planned for the Garnets in their Week 0 matchup against Monsignor Farrell High School, as Rye fell behind 21-7 after two quarters of play. However, resilience and trust from the players and coaching staff helped fuel an electric comeback, as Rye notched 24 unanswered points to claim the 31-21 victory.
It was a team effort for Coach Dino Garr’s squad, which surrendered a 90-yard touchdown pass to conclude the first half and collectively rallied to pick up the positive result.
“It’s a hell of a win for us and our program,” Garr said in an interview after the game. “Our players showed great character.”
Rye trailed by 14 at halftime, but their offensive line stepped up in a big way in the second half and gave first-time starting quarterback Carson Miller more time to make plays, which he did. That line has only one returning starter – Patrick McGuire.
“Carson had a great game in his first start,” Garr told MyRye.com. “He made some tough throws.”
McGuire led the offensive line’s resurgent second half, while also making big plays on defense. The two-way player was a major difference on both sides of the football in the third and fourth quarters, giving the Garnets a chance to rally and eventually take the lead.
Miller was complemented by a strong ground game, as Chris Iuliano and Archer Fenton both performed well on the ground. Like McGuire, Fenton added contributions on offense and defense in the win.
“It was a great deal of persistence,” Garr said. “The captains were outstanding, all six of them.”

Rye will look to build off the Week 0 win – something the Garnets failed to achieve in last year’s huge success – in their next game, a road tilt against Ramapo. That game is scheduled for the night of Friday, September 13.
