Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook Swimming and Diving Knocks Off Section Champions in Thrilling Finish
The Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook Swimming and Diving Team headed into Friday’s meet as underdogs in a matchup against the 2023 section-champion Eastchester Eagles, who had not lost a dual meet in two whole years. That changed on Friday, as Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook eked out a triumphant 94-91 win in both teams’ closest score of the season.
“This a huge win for the Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook Swim and Dive team,” Head Coach Katie Konopka told MyRye.com after the game. “The girls worked together to swim fast in individual events and relays in order to beat a very talented Eastchester team.”
Heading into the matchup today, the Eagles were undefeated in dual meets across the past two calendar years – they had won a sectional championship more recently than lost in this format. “The 12 points scored by the divers Claire Biddle, Jessica Lafferty, Zoe Lopez, and Autumn Massey-Carver were crucial for our team win,” Konopka said. On top of the divers, Sophie Boyle won her first varsity event (the 200-meter freestyle) to help her team to victory.
It seems like Kate Chesley will be participating in every race at sectionals this year, as she added to her already sizeable list of qualifications with two more on Friday. She earned an automatic bid to sectionals in the 50M and 500M freestyle events.
After the exhilirating win, Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook (4-1) will take the weekend to relax and gear up for another tough matchup at Suffern on Monday, September 23. The meet is scheduled for 5:00pm at Suffern High School’s pool.
