Today, meet actress Diana Millay.
Diana Millay was an accomplished American actress, model, and author, best known for her work in television during the 1960s and her portrayal of Laura Collins in the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. Born on June 7, 1935, in Rye, New York, Millay’s early life in the town played an influential role in shaping her career.
Growing up in Rye, she developed a passion for acting and the arts, which led her to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Rye’s close proximity to New York City allowed her to gain exposure to the modeling world, where she first garnered attention as a child model for the Montgomery Ward catalog.
Millay’s beauty and charisma quickly transitioned her into acting, and she began working on Broadway, making her debut in the production of The Glass Menagerie. Her natural talent for the stage soon caught the attention of television producers, and she made the jump to the small screen. Over the years, Millay appeared in over 500 television episodes, gaining popularity in the 1960s for her roles on a variety of shows, including Perry Mason, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Bonanza, and Gunsmoke.
Her breakthrough role, however, came when she was cast as Laura Collins on Dark Shadows. Her character was a supernatural being, a phoenix who would rise from the ashes, bringing a mystical and eerie presence to the show. This role made her a household name and cemented her place in television history. During the same period, she appeared in Peyton Place, another popular soap opera, where she played a recurring role, further showcasing her acting versatility.
In addition to her television work, Millay continued to appear on Broadway, starring in productions like Mary, Mary, which were well-received by both audiences and critics. Later in her career, Millay transitioned into writing, publishing several books, including I’d Rather Eat Than Act and The Power of Halloween, where she explored personal reflections and the supernatural themes that had defined much of her acting career.
Millay remained connected to her roots in Rye throughout her life, and the town is seen as a significant influence on her early development as an actress. She passed away on January 8, 2021, leaving behind a legacy in television and theater, remembered not only for her iconic roles but also for her contributions to literature and the performing arts.
