The Rye Field Hockey Team suffered its fifth loss of the 2024 season and second to John Jay-Cross River on Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0. The Garnets hung with the Wolves better than in their early-season 3-0 shutout defeat, but still could not muster a single goal.

“The girls gave it all they got against a very athletic John Jay group,” Assistant Coach Theresa Jelalain told MyRye.com after the game. “Everyone kept hustling and playing tough through the last horn.”

Jelalain described the affair as “back and forth”, as the two clubs traded chances all game. The Wolves broke the ice with a close-in tally at the 11:25 mark of the third quarter. It stood as the game-winning goal after neither team could solve the other the rest of the way.

After a very strong start to the season, the Garnets are now at 7-5 after twelve games. They will look to get back in the win column in their next matchup, an away game at Somers. That one is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, at Somers High School. Watch it here. Watch the replay of the JJCR loss here.

(Note for the Somers game: LocalLive has the game starting at 4:30pm, while Rye’s athletic calendar says 6:00pm. We are awaiting clarity on which time slot the Varsity game will occur in vs. which slot the JV game will occur in.)
