A very successful season for the Rye Varsity Field Hockey Team came to an end on Friday, November 1, as the #4 Garnets fell 4-1 to the #1 Lakeland Hornets. With the loss, Rye was eliminated from the Section 1 Class B tournament in the semi-finals. Lakeland has since went on to win the section.

“The girls played hard against a good Lakeland team,” Assistant Coach Theresa Jelalain told MyRye.com. “Great season for the girls.”

Throughout the year, Rye was a very strong team, finding themselves as high as #5 in Lohud’s rankings in September and finishing with 13 wins. They ran into some trouble down the stretch, finishing the year 6-6 in their final 12 games, including three losses to Lakeland and two to John Jay-Cross River. Nonetheless, the Garnets were one of the few teams in the entire state to play a game in November.

Rye finishes the year 13-7, with a trip to the sectional semifinals on their resume and a lot to look forward to in 2025. Only three players – Kate Morreale, Caroline Doyle, and Rachel Kelly-Walsh – are graduating. Jelalain and Head Coach Kelly Vegliante have plenty to be excited about for next fall, as the Garnets will seek their third league title since the turn of the decade.
