Repeat Complete: Rye Girls Soccer Champions Section 1 Again
The Rye Girls Soccer Team defeated Somers on Saturday, November 2, reclaiming their spot atop Section 1, Class A. The team has now won consecutive section titles after winning the championship last year as well.
“Rye came out fast and furious against the defending AA Somers in the Sectional Title Game,” Head Coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com after the game. “Shira Rand opened the scoring up just 8 minutes into the game scoring directly off a corner kick. Freshman Hannah Jachman placed a perfectly weighted pass to Sophomore Charlotte Keenan who hit a perfect shot into the back of the side net. [Jachman] would place another perfect through ball to Mary Sack who placed the ball in the lower corner with just three minutes left in the first half.”
Stapled to a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes, the Garnets held on to come away with the 4-2 win. Charlotte Keenan scored a “world class goal”, according to Savage, to add insurance to Rye’s score in the second half. “Rye held down a lock down defense with Claire Nemsick, Ava Cross. Reese Lejuez and Parker Calhoun,” Savage said.
The #2 Garnets’ path to the finals included wins over #15 Westlake, #7 Pelham, #3 Pearl River (OT), and #4 Somers. Their perfect 4-0 playoff record will face its next test later this week, as the team moves into the Regional Tournament.
Rye (18-1-1) will technically be the host of the winner of Section 9 on Wednesday, November 6 at 6:00pm, although the game is at a neutral site – Nyack High School. View more information on Section 9 here. Watch the win against Somers here. View the completed Section 1 bracket here.
