Rye PD Issues 22 Alcohol Beverage Control Violations in Undercover Sweep
Rye PD issued 22 Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) violations in an undercover sweep on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 and into the early morning of Thanksgiving day. On Wednesday, between the hours of 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm, the PD conducted a “Cops in Shops” operation at Chestnut Mobil on 69 Theodore Fremd Avenue. The PD has staged a similar operation at the same location on past years.
“Cops in Shops” is an undercover operation in which police officers in plain clothes pose as customers or store employees in order to detect under aged persons attempting to purchase, using false identifications to obtain alcoholic beverages or alcohol theft. Sixty subjects were checked for proper identification when purchasing alcoholic beverages, 22 ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) violations were issued and 15 fake IDs were seized during the operation.
From 10:00 pm until 4:00 am on Thanksgiving day officers concentrated on the downtown district focusing on issues such as overcrowding in our local bars to underage drinking. Rye PD officers operated in a mix of marked and unmarked units canvassing the area for underage drinking, disorderly conduct, and other alcohol related City Code Violations. Several times throughout the night, officers changed the focus from enforcement to safety, assisting local businesses with overcrowding and crowd control. Rye PD reminds the public that booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
