Garnets Indoor Track Competes in Final Meet of 2024
The Rye Track and Field Team took to New York City on Friday night (December 20) for their final meet of the 2024 calendar year at the Nike Track and Field Center. It was a late addition to the schedule for Head Coach Bryan Johnson and his group, which helped get them some extra reps before the holiday break.
“[The] meet was a big one, with great competition,” Johnson told MyRye.com on Saturday. “Without a meet Friday, it’d have been three weeks and we wanted to keep our edge heading into break.”
Tino MacKinnon was the lone medalist for the Garnets, placing third in the 1000 meter race. His time was a season-best mark.
Jillian DeSanto (55M), Sophia Bubeck (55M hurdles), and Kate Schatz (triple jump) were the other three athletes to record season-best times in their final meet of 2024. Sophia Ambrosini (600M), Lily Oberbannscheidt (1000M), and Alex Schatz (triple) did even better, as all three earned personal records.
“In addition to the date, what was appealing about this meet was that it gave our kids some non-traditional distances to run,” Co-Head Coach Kevin Murphy told MyRye.com. “Our runners in the 55, hurdles, and field events got their work in, but an athlete who usually runs the 300 or 600M could run the 500. That’s a really unique race to run and a chance of pace is sometimes good for a runner.”
Rye’s holiday break extends all the way through Tuesday, January 7, when they travel to Rockland Community College for their second large Section 1 meet of the season. The invitiational is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm in the new year, and Rye will be one of 20 schools participating.
