On Friday afternoon, two Rye men, ages 50 and 49, thought it would be a good idea to go out in the Long Island Sound on what the police say were “paddle boards/surf boards”. That was until the two became separated and one of the men came ashore at Greenhaven Beach and called the police to report he had lost his friend in the Long Island Sound. At the time of the emergency call, there was a small craft advisory on the Long Island Sound, indicating unsafe conditions.

The Rye resident placing the emergency call to police stated the last time he saw his friend he appeared to be taken by the current towards Larchmont Harbor. Numerous patrol assets were dispatched to shore points to try and gain a visual on the subject in distress and to interview the reporting party.

The Rye PD Marine Unit responded to the area via boat, battling 20 miles per hour winds and three foot waves to look for the victim. Police ultimately located the separated party on shore at Seven Oaks Lane in the Village of Mamaroneck. Patrol units and EMS responded to the location and verified the party was in good health. Besides the Rye PD, responding agencies included the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department, Village of Mamaroneck Harbor Master, New Rochelle Police Department Harbor Unit and Sea Tow Western Long Island Sound.
