What could possibly go wrong when we have a reality TV star keeping us all safe by chasing a drone in the City of Rye? Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel (The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, The Real Housewives of New York City) broadcast from her TikTok feed that she was witnessing drone activity in the sky above Rye.

“We’re in Rye, New York, FYI. It’s through these woods. I see it,” said Frankel in her TikTok, wearing pajamas while being chauffeured through Rye. “I see it blinking. It’s not moving. It’s above us. Oh, my God, my first drone. It’s huge. Hold on. I gotta see it. We gotta see it. I’m freaking out.”

Frankel and many others have been busy speculating about drones over the last month after there were multiple unexplained sightings in New Jersey that set off a ton of unanswered speculation.

Last Monday, December 16th, 2024, Rye guy and Westchester County Executive George Latimer reported he wrote a letter to President Joe Biden expressing concerns about drones saying in part “with an absence of answers [about drones], our residents are vulnerable to insidious conspiracy theories … that may be pedaled by fringe ideologues.”

Hmmm …

“It’s gigantic,” continued reality star Frankel in her TikTok, who according to reports, maintains a home in Greenwich. “Like it was like a spaceship, and it was big, but like, it like dissolves in the fog, and you get close to it, and it’s just blinking lights. They’re so ominous … It is the size of a bus. They’re big. It’s like a small spaceship.”

In contrast to just a few reports of drones over the last few years, Rye PD says it has received 5 – 10 reports of drones over the last month, but nothing of apparent concern.

“We are receiving complaints or reports of drones in the air,” City of Rye Public Safety Commissioner Mike Kopy told MyRye.com on Sunday. “There’s not much we can do regarding a resident or a civilian flying a drone in the city.”

Drone flight is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

And while Kopy said the police are aware of certain groups that may use drones in the furtherance of criminal activity, this has not been documented in Rye. Further, Rye PD uses drones for various uses including documenting scenes, assisting with searches, public safety and crowd control.

“My expectation is within the next five years that drone usage in public safety is going to be extremely common,” said Kopy. “Certainly as the prices drop and people start to really take these things for the fullest advantage. It allows officers and firefighters to have a better understanding of the type of scene that they’re responding to prior to their arrival on location.”
