The Rye Boys Basketball Team played two pivotal games last week, falling 48-44 to Yorktown on the road before bouncing back with a clutch win against Byram Hills in a rematch of last year’s section championship game, 57-54. The split brings Rye’ record to 5-3 on the season as they continue to play close with almost every opponent.

“I was very proud of the effort by the team and the fact they never gave up playing in a tough environment against a solid opponent on their home floor,” Head Coach Tommy Proudian told MyRye.com, speaking about the loss at Yorktown on Wednesday, January 8. “They could have easily folded the tent but didn’t. That’s a great sign, and that mindset will certainly help us win some tough games going forward. I could not have asked more from my team in the effort department.”

Rye trailed by 12 with just over six minutes remaining and closed on an 11-2 run, coming up just shy of a monumental comeback. Jake Kessner led all players with 17 points, while Kaiden Gonzalez scored 14 to pace the Huskers.

The Garnets saw fortune shift in their favor on Friday night (1/10), as Proudian and his group bounced back for a huge win against the Bobcats, pulling ahead for good on a last-minute three from Carson Miller. Kessner once again led Rye with 17 points, supported by Andrew Wilmarth (16 points, 5/5 from three) and Rocklan Boisseau (12 second half points).

“The team once again showed how resilient they are and what great character they possess,” Proudian told MyRye.com on Sunday evening. “Coming off a difficult loss to Yorktown on Wednesday, the team rose to the occassion in front of a sold out, jampacked gym… I am just so happy the team was able to experience a win like that in front of a huge home crowd, they derserved it.”

The Garnets (5-3) continue to battle against premiere competition, which is not about to change – Rye hosts Lakeland on Tuesday, January 14, in their next game. Start time is scheduled for 5:00pm at Rye High. Watch it here. Watch the win vs Byram Hills here.
