Rye Boys Basketball Net Back-to-Back Wins with Sights Set on Rivalry Week

The Rye Boys Basketball Team finally put together two consecutive winning efforts this past week, defeating Pelham 48-25 on Wednesday 1/22 and Henry Hudson 54-33 on Friday 1/24. The effort level has rarely been a problem for the Garnets, but finally their execution, especially on defense, came through and allowed them to secure the weeklong winning streak.
On Wednesday, Rye played down three starters, with Jake Kessner, Rockland Boisseau, and Carson Miller all unavailable. “Justin McCarthy stepped up big time with three starters out,” Head Coach Tommy Proudian told MyRye.com on Friday after the victories. “McCarthy scored 15 points to lead all scorers.”
Rye came away with a 23-point victory in large part due to their defense, which frustrated the Pelicans’ offense all evening and only allowed 25 points. Pelham’s top scorer, Sean Grubert, only managed nine points.
“Great defensive effort to hold Pelham to only 25 points,” Proudian said of his team. “[I’m] proud of how the team stepped up with three starters out.”
Proudian and his team kept the momentum going into their road contest on Friday, as Rye’s defense once again stood out in their 19-point victory over Henry Hudson. With Kessner and Boisseau back in the lineup, the Garnets had no problem handling an overmatched crew of Sailors.
“Great defensive effort again, [as we] held Hen Hud to only 10 first half points,” Proudian said on Friday. “[It’s] nice to get back to back wins heading into big rivalry week.”
Ben Hudson scored 12 and Andrew Wilmarth added 10 to pace the Garnets on a night where eleven different athletes scored at least a point. Henry Shoemaker & Kessner added seven points apiece as the primary depth scoring.
