Rye Squash Splits Midweek Games with Victory over City Squash, Loss to Hackley

The Rye Squash Team picked up a win over the past week, taking care of business on Wednesday 1/23 against City Squash 6-1, before falling short in another close 4-3 score to Hackley on Thursday 1/23. With the split, Rye is now 1-1 in their busiest section of the schedule this season and 3-3 overall on the year.
Wednesday’s win was dominant for the Garnets, even with their star Charlie Rodilosso unavailable for the contest. “The team looked very strong with a convincing win against City Squash,” Head Coach Quan Hyunh said after the match. “Rocco DeFife had a tough loss playing in the #1 position with wins from the rest of the team.”
Hyunh gave special shoutouts to the efforts of Nate Kim-Reuter, Harry Ellis, Emmett Deaner and Michael Talbott.
Rye had little time to rest before gearing up for their Thursday showdown at Hackley, where they came up just short of a second consecutive victory. The Garnets lost 4-3 for the second time in three matches – they are two individual wins away from being 5-1, instead sitting at 3-3. Despite the loss, Hyunh was encouraged by his team’s effort on the second half of a back-to-back.
“Although it was a tough loss against Hackley, there were some good matches and the team is getting stronger as the season progresses,” Hyunh told MyRye.com.
Kim-Reuter won his 5-game match (score 3-2) in a gritty effort to keep the final as close as possible.
Rye (3-3) is in the midst of a stretch of five games in nine days from January 22-30, including their next match today (Saturday, January 25) against Squash Haven. The match begins at 1:00pm, as Rye travels to New Haven to play at Yale’s courts.
