Five athletes earned medals for the Rye Varsity Indoor Track team on Sunday, February 16, as the squad competed in one of their last events of the year. Head Coaches Bryan Johnson and Kevin Murphy and their boys and girls have state qualifiers to look forward to after a solid showing at the Section 1 Championship meet on Sunday.
Fresh off being named Rye High School’s Athlete of the Month for January, senior Erin Ball shined the brightest. She cleared 5′ 5″ on the high jump on her third and final attempt, the 4th-best leap in New York State this year. Only four other athletes could even clear 5′ 0″. Johnson confirmed this height was a personal record “by several inches.” Ball also took home the second-highest placement in any event for any Garnet, coming in 2nd in the long jump event – another event where her third attempt was her top, recorded score.
Four Garnets finished third in their respective events to earn medalist. Sophia Bubeck (55-meter hurdles race), Anna Kearney (pole vault), and Claire Curran (600M relay) were the three other athletes on the girls side to clinch third place. Aidan Schmidt was the only medalist on the boys side, earning third in the 300M race.
The next meet for the Garnets, state qualifiers, is next Sunday, February 23, at the familiar Armory Track and Field Center in New York City. Depending on how some of the athletes do, it could be the final event for the team in 2024-25. However, they will be hoping for representation at the NY State Championship meet on Saturday, March 8.
