Going Native is our gardening series highlighting the contribution of native plants to building resilient landscapes. MyRye.com will introduce you to native plant experts that will tell you ways to get started with a small garden patch, a complete property or just a few garden containers.

Today we speak with Dominique Biondi of Ecologic.

MyRye.com: What are three of the easiest things every homeowner can do on their property to lower their environmental impact and create a welcoming environment for pollinators and other wildlife?

Biondi: Remember that you have small neighbors who live on the property with you, sometimes for several generations! Try to share the space and you will be able to enjoy their beauty and benefits. Less is more.

  • Limit pesticide use for only specific, high-priority problems, such as Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) and tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima).
  • Designate a lawn/more maintained section of yard, and allow chosen garden spaces to have a more wild approach (no constant mowing, no extra early clean up, let leaves / leaf mulch accumulate there over winter, no spraying broad-spectrum products).
  • Plant species of flowers, shrubs, and trees that are native to New York.
