Ajit Jain, born on July 23, 1951, in Sundargarh, Odisha, India, is a prominent Indian-American business executive renowned for his significant contributions to the insurance industry, particularly through his long-standing association with Berkshire Hathaway.
Early Life and Education
Jain completed his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in 1972. After working with IBM in India from 1973 to 1976, he pursued an MBA at Harvard Business School, graduating in 1978.
Career
Post-MBA, Jain joined McKinsey & Co., gaining valuable experience in the United States. In 1986, he transitioned to Berkshire Hathaway at the invitation of Warren Buffett, despite having limited prior exposure to the insurance sector. Over the years, Jain’s strategic acumen led to the growth of Berkshire Hathaway’s reinsurance operations, establishing him as a key figure within the company. In 2018, he was appointed Vice Chairman of Insurance Operations and joined the board of directors.
Philanthropy, Personal Life & Rye Connection
In 2005, motivated by his son’s diagnosis with a rare muscular dystrophy, Jain established the Jain Foundation in Seattle, aiming to find a cure for dysferlinopathy. Ajit Jain has maintained a residence on Island Drive in Rye, New York since 1996, according to public records.
