Season Outlook is a series where MyRye.com asks every varsity coach about the season ahead. Today, we learn about the Rye Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team and Head Coach Michelle Mason, who are 1-0 on the young season.

Last spring, the Garnets reached the New York State Finals, coming up just one win shy of a state championship after winning 19 games and a sectional title. Their schedule in 2025 is going to once again feature premier competition in the area, and creates a fun, fast, busy spring ahead.

Six key seniors graduated after the state finals loss last year, but the returning core is very capable of getting Rye back to that position. “We have a dynamic, talented, and committed group of both returning and new varsity players,” Mason told MyRye.com before the season. “Our student-athletes have been working extremely hard throughout the preseason and our first week of tryouts/practice, and are so excited to begin games.”

Some of the big names on the schedule several top programs nationally, including Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, and Conestoga. Mason admits she is both interesed and excited to see how the new 90-second shot clock affects competition at the highest level against those programs and in all the games for Rye during the 2025 season. The pace of play will increase thanks to the rule change, which plays into Rye’s favor in many matchups.

After the team was selected, four captains were selected: Cami Brooks, Caroling Doyle, Katherine Ebeling, and Mary Sack. “We have our varsity players nominate captains and we encourage them to share a reason why they feel their teammate(s) should be in this leadership role,” Mason said of her team’s captain selection process. “Common themes our players share for why they selected a person [were] inclusive, hard working, and supportive.”

The season kicked off on Thursday, March 27, in a non-league win over Somers. Tuesday, April 1 is the first league game at Pelham at 4:30pm. One of their biggest league games is against Nyack on April 15, a contest which Mason highlighted before the season began. It’s a busy, tough, but exciting schedule for Rye as they look to reign Section 1 Class C once again.
