The Rye Softball Team opened non-league play with a 7-3 loss to Nyack on Tuesday, April 1. The Garnets fought until the final out, but were unable to mount a late comeback in their first game of the season.

“We played hard all game, but in the end came up short,” Head Coach Alex Tejera told MyRye.com on Wednesday. “It is a long season and we will continue getting better.”

Tessa Labovitz roped a two-run single to left field in the first inning to give Rye an early Iead and energize the dugout. However, from there, the offense went cold, only scoring once more. Labowitz added a walk as she reached base in two of her three plate appearances. Clara Meszkat and Caroline Joyce also recorded hits for Rye, and Joyce scored twice. Reese McGill earned her first varsity RBI to account for the third run in the game for the visiting Garnets.

Joyce pitched the entire game as well, throwing six innings and striking out seven Red Hawks. She surrendered five earned runs and seven baserunners in the circle to complement her 1-3 performance in the batter’s box, including a double.

Rye (0-1) will be on the road for a long stretch of games as renovations on their new home field linger. They will look to get into the win column next on Thursday, April 3, as they travel to Pearl River High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm against the Pirates.
