Tiebreakers Cost Rye Boys Tennis Against Raiders

Rye Boys Tennis fell in their second match of the 2025 spring season, dropping a 6-1 decision to the Scarsdale Raiders. 8th-grader Grant Lobo was the only winning competitor for the Garnets, defeating his foe Finn Miller 6-4, 6-2.
“He stayed focused, optimistic, and steady the whole game, fighting hard for his points,” Head Coach Sue Dickson said of Lobo. “It was a great match.”
Near-freezing feels-like temperatures and gale force winds created an environment not ideal for tennis, but both teams battled through for a match that was closer than the five-point spread suggests. Three of Scarsdale’s wins came on tiebreakers. Senior Alex Gordon and junior brother Luke Gordon, the other singles players alongside Lobo, both lost in a third super tiebreaker set. The top doubles team for the Garnets dropped a tiebreaker 10-8 as part of a Scarsdale sweep in the doubles side of the matchup. If Rye had won all three tiebreakers, they would have found a way to claim victory, although that is a big if.
“The second match for Rye’s young team was a challenge,” Dickson admitted to MyRye.com. “Even though we lost, the players will learn to compete every point of every match and play with more confidence moving forward.”
The Garnets will look to rebound and get back in the win column on a quick turnaround as they travel to Mamaroneck for a road match. First serve against the Tigers is set for 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 9 in a rescheduled contest.
