Mets first baseman and 2019 National League Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso took the field in downtown Purchase Street on Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2025. Alonso and his wife Haley Walsh had lunch at Poppy’s diner, a Rye classic frequented by NY-16 Congressman George Latimer and other Rye old timers.

“He had breakfast for lunch, he was very accommodating, talked to everyone who approached him,” said Poppy’s owner Gerry Massinello. “I am really a Yankee fan hence my license plate 7MYIDL. (Mickey Mantle). But, I love baseball, so I do watch the Mets!”

The Mets are 24 – 14 (.632) and lead the Nation League East.
