UPDATE 7/30/2025: There is now a fundraiser to assist Delicias Arellano deli with repairs and getting back on their feet.
A fire at a Midland Avenue deli in Rye will close the establishment for an unknown period of time. The Rye Fire Department was dispatched at 9:47pm Monday evening to 382 Midland Avenue near the cross street of Palisades Road for a reported odor of smoke in the basement.
The mixed-use occupancy building has the Delicias Arellano deli on the first floor and two residential apartments above. On arrival, crews encountered light smoke throughout the structure, prompting an upgrade to the initial assignment and the response of additional resources.
As firefighters worked to locate the source, the smoke condition intensified and became visible from the exterior of the building. A working fire was transmitted, bringing in further mutual aid support.
Crews located the fire within the walls of a room adjacent to the commercial kitchen equipment. The fire was successfully contained to the room of origin. Firefighters conducted overhaul operations, checked for any fire extension, and secured utilities.
Despite the hot and humid weather, the fire was brought under control within 45 minutes, with no injuries reported according to Rye FD. The Westchester Cause and Origin Team responded to the scene and determined the cause to be accidental, attributed to a failure in the sheet metal surrounding the commercial kitchen appliances.
Rye FD received assistance from its mutual-aid departments, the Rye Police Department, Port Chester/Rye/Rye Brook EMS and Con Edison.
In the early hours Tuesday, the Delicias Arellano deli posted on social media it “will remain temporarily closed until further notice due to a fire that occurred last night in the restaurant” and that “Thankfully everyone is okay”.
“Thank you for your patience and loyalty. We hope to welcome you back to Delicias Arellano as soon as possible,” the notice concluded.
