
City Hall was abuzz Wednesday afternoon with lots of celebration across the Rye Police Department members and the families of various officers. The department announced the promotion of three of its members – Christopher Salguero was promoted to Police Sergeant and Robert Jones and Alex Whalen were each promoted to the rank of Detective.
“To our new sergeant, our new detectives, I wish you well, long and healthy career, and I thank you on behalf of the City of Rye for your commitment,” said Public Safety Commissioner Mike Kopy to the officers and assembled guests.

Salguero to Sergeant
Christopher Salguero has been promoted to Police Sergeant. He joined the department in 2016 after transferring from the New York State Park Police. He was appointed to Detective in 2023, and has also served as a Field Training Officer and DWI instructor. Sergeant Salguero will attend a three week Supervisor School and upon completion will be assigned to the Patrol Division under Patrol Lieutenant Al Hein.


Jones and Whalen to Detective
Robert Jones has been appointed to the rank of Detective. Detective Jones began his career with the department in January 2019 and has since served as a Field Training Officer, Taser Instructor, and Defensive Tactics Instructor.
Alex Whalen has been appointed to the rank of Detective. Whalen transferred to Rye from the NYPD in 2016. Prior to becoming a Detective, Whalen was assigned as the Marine Unit Commander.
Both newly appointed detectives will attend a three week photography and crime scene evidence technician class before beginning their new assignment as general investigators under Detective Lieutenant Michael Anfuso.
