The Rye Girls Tennis team participated in a modified tournament-style event on Saturday, October 4, playing on the Nyack High School courts to help raise money for an important local cause. The doubles teams of Ella Poole-Paloma Pepper and Reese McGill-Iciar Garate both picked up wins on the court, but the story of the day transcended the serve, return, and rally.

“The event is a fun, modified format event with prizes, t-shirts, food and friendly competition,” Head Coach Tony Campbell told MyRye.com on Monday. “Players play a set against girls from each competing school on a court assigned by their spot in the playing order… The event raises money for a scholarship in the name of Georgia Williams, a Nyack HS English teacher, and colleague and friend of Coach Josh Weinman, who grew up in Rye.”

This tournament was something Campbell and his team circled on the calendar before their first match of the season, as they do every year. The festivities bring a group of five schools together at Nyack High School to honor Williams and raise money and awareness for both her scholarship and breast cancer research.

Poole and Pepper won the first doubles court for the second straight year, while McGill and Garate won the second doubles court. Instead of normal best-of-three-set matches, the athletes only had to win one set against their opponent before taking on the next. Rye’s top two pairings helped put a cherry on top of a successful, impactful weekend to kick off the month of October.

The Garnets return to normal matches today, Monday 10/6, as they host Blind Brook at 4:30pm.
