The Rye Girls Basketball team picked up a close vicory over Fox Lane on Monday, December 15, forming a furious third quarter comeback to win 54-49. The Garnets entered the contest with some important players unavailable, but still turned a deficit as large as eight on its head to win on the road for the third straight time to open the season.
“We battled through sickness and came out on top vs Fox Lane,” Head Coach Margo Hackett proudly told MyRye.com after the game.
The critical juncture of the game was the third quarter, in which Rye allowed just seven points, including only one field goal in the final 5:15 of game action. Their suffocating defense has now been the primary catalyst behind two of their three victories in 2025-26.
After Rye took a 39-37 lead in the waning seconds of the third quarter, they never trailed again. They held a slight but steady advantage for the entire last eight minutes, hitting free throws and getting stops down the stretch when they needed it most.
In the box score, Phoebe Greto led with 19 points, several of which came via high-pressure free throws. The big senior was a threat every time she found the ball in her hands inside the paint. She was flanked by sharpshooters Frankie Chiaravalle with a season-high 16 points and Stella Maresca with ten points, her second consecutive double digit output.
Rye (3-0) has one more test remaining on their four-game road trip to start the year, which is at Horace Greeley on Wednesday, December 17. The Garnets travel to the Quakers’ home gym for a 5:00pm start, followed by a JV matchup between two schools. Watch it here. Replay the Fox Lane win here.
