The #1 Rye Baseball team advanced to round three of the Class AA playoffs on Friday, May 22, as they downed Horace Greeley 5-0. The Garnets scored three first-inning runs and cruised behind strong pitching from there to secure a spot in the sectional tournament final four for the second consecutive season.
Michael Bubeck took the ball for head coach Michael Bruno and never gave it up, throwing a complete game shutout with two strikeouts. He only walked one and allowed three hits across his seven brilliant innings and 77 pitches. Only one Quakers’ runner reached scoring position all evening.
Rye garnered only four hits, but three of them drove home at least one run and came with two outs. Luke Ontaneda crushed a two-run home run in the first inning, the hardest-hit ball of the game for either team without much question. Nolan Hutson and Lucas London both added two-out, RBI singles in the second and fifth innings respectively to extend the lead. Despite a low-output offensive day, Rye felt in control of the game the entire way.
The Garnets (17-5, 2-0 postseason) will host Yorktown on Tuesday, May 26, in the winner’s bracket finals. If Rye wins, they advance to the championship round on Saturday 5/30, needing one win. If they lose, they must win three straight games to win their second consecutive sectional title in the double elimination format.
