The #1 Rye Baseball team stunned Yorktown to advance to the Sectional championship game on Tuesday, May 26, winning 4-3 on a walk-off home run. The blast from Jamie Morris helped the Garnets overcome a 3-1 deficit in the seventh inning and stay unbeaten in the 2026 postseason.
Morris crushed an 0-2 pitch to dead center field – with Yorktown two outs away from pulling off the upset – off Huskers’ starting pitcher Swaraaj Pujari’s 103rd pitch of the afternoon. Pujari had allowed just one run over 6.1 innings. The home run sent Disbrow Park into rapturous frenzy.
Prior to the home run, Michael Talbott and Nolan Hutson both reached on ground ball errors – Yorktown’s only two errors of the ballgame. The other Garnet run came courtesy of a Harry Ellis RBI single in the fourth inning. Yorktown scored two times off Clayton McCarthy early before the sophomore settled down for 5.1 strong innings. Lucas London earned the win in relief despite allowing an earned run.
Rye (18-5, 3-0 postseason) are done hosting games in the 2026 season. They play again on Saturday, May 30, at SUNY Purchase in the Section 1 Class AA championship game. The Garnets will have two chances to win and advance to the State tournament for the second consecutive season.
