The Rye Boys Rugby team came up short in their penultimate game of the regular season on Wednesday, May 6, falling to Fordham Prep 21-5. The teams played close for most of the match before the Rams scored two late tries to pull away and secure a huge win ahead of playoff play.
“Rye started the game well, with quick ball play and strong defense, responding to an early Fordham Prep try,” Assistant Coach Phil Verona told MyRye.com. “Fordham Prep opened up the second half with strong kicking and capitalizing on Rye mistakes and turnovers. Field position played a crucial role in this match.”
Both teams entered the action near the top of the RugbyNY pecking order, but it was the Rams scoring 14 second-half points and holding the Garnets scoreless to earn the hard-fought victory. Fordham Prep seemed to wear Rye down by the final whistle, forcing Rye to try to go the length of the pitch on offense.
With the loss, the Garnets drop to third place in the RugbyNY Met Division. They have one final regular season game remaining on May 16 at home against Rockaway. The Senior Night contest begins at 6:00pm at Nugent Stadium.
