The Rye Girls Golf team saw six golfers compete in day one of the Section 1 championship tournament on Monday, May 18, tied for the most of any school. Of the group, sophomore Leila Kurbusi led the Garnets with a top 20 score, earning her the right to compete in day two of the tournament.

“Rye had a strong showing at the Section 1 Girls Golf Championship Tournament Day 1, competing in extremely hot weather and challenging course conditions,” Head Coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com. “Rye was the only school to qualify six golfers for the Sectional tournament, a testament to the depth and consistency of the Garnets program.”

Kurbusi came away with the best score of the sextet, although Phoebe Lee ended strong after a slow start and barely missed the cut. Kurbusi will have a chance to compete again at day two of the tournament, which is on Wednesday, May 27, at Whippoorwill Country Club.

The other four Garnets include Anna Bancroft, Tori Hobbins, Elle Ridley, and Sophie Ehrlich. “The girls showed tremendous toughness and resilience in very difficult conditions,” Savage continued. “The heat and course setup made every shot challenging, but the team stayed positive, supported one another, and competed with great character all day long.”

Rye concluded the season at 12-2, and their performance Monday earned them third place in Section 1. The last event on the calendar for the Garnets in 2026 is day two of the Sectional tournament for Kurbusi. She will need another elite score to extend her season to States.
