The Rye Softball team’s 2026 season came to a close on Friday, May 22, as the #14 Garnets fell to #3 Yorktown 17-7. Rye struck first and later crawled back to only trail 7-6, but the Huskers added plenty of insurance in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away and advance to the second round.
Rye accumulated ten hits throughout the game, including RBI knocks from Caroline Joyce in the first, Penelope Gilmore and Sophiah Collins in the fourth, and Olivia Hodes in the seventh. Eight of the nine starters reached base at least once for the Garnets, including a 3-4 day from Gilmore and two hits and a run from Ava Rollano.
In the top of the fifth inning, Rye got the potential go-ahead run up to bat in search of the upset. However, Yorktown worked out of trouble and then extended their one-run lead to 14-6 in the bottom half of the frame. They added three more in the sixth. The Huskers piled up 15 hits and seven walks – the top six hitters in their order went 14-24 (.583 batting average) with six walks.
Rye concludes the season at 7-14.
