After serving his flock for over 15 years, Rev. Monsignor Donald M. Dwyer will retire from the Church of Resurrection in Rye on September 1st. Monsignor Dwyer announced the news in a Church email to parishioners.
“After much prayer and reflection, and after consultation with my doctors and other priests, I have decided that I will retire as your pastor, effective September 1,” said Dwyer.
Dwyer said he has been facing a number of medical conditions, including arthritis that limits some of his activities. He said he has informed Archbishop of New York Ronald Hicks and Bishop Edmund Whalen, the Vicar General (and Hick’s right hand man).
Monsignor Dwyer was ordained by Cardinal Cooke in 1979. He served ten years as a parish priest in Yonkers, six years on Staten Island, and 16 years in the East Bronx. His position at Resurrection is only his fourth assignment for the Archdiocese of New York. He was appointed pastor of Resurrection by Cardinal Dolan in 2011, and renewed in 2017 for another term.
