It seemed as though it would be the perfect night to celebrate America’s 250th birthday at Playland with some fireworks. There were large crowds of people both on the Playland dock and in Rye Town Park. Both of the parking lots were full and there police directing people and cars both inside and outside the park.

However, at around 8:00 dark clouds started to roll in and the trees began to shake. Soon the storm started and both lightning and rain came down hard.

While the crowds fled frantically for cover, some remained hopeful they would still see the fireworks. Instead on the planned show however, it was lightning that lit the beach.

Shortly after the storm began Playland officials announced the fireworks would be cancelled due to the inclement weather and advised prospective firework watchers to return home safely.
