The Westchester County Health Department has given permission to Coveleigh Club and other Sound Shore beaches to reopen, after water samples from those beaches met water quality standards.
Coveleigh and other beaches have been closed for five days since last Friday, after the area saw over 3.28 inches of rainfall on Thursday into Friday.
The Coveleigh Club beach has been closed repeatedly this summer after various heavy rainfalls.
Heavy rains and discharges from stormwater drains directly affect Long Island Sound waters. As a result, these waters may contain high levels of harmful bacteria that may cause illness after a heavy rain. The bacterial contamination is from road runoff into drainage outfalls near these beaches.
These beaches are allowed to reopen only after clearance from the DOH.
Threshold levels have been established by the DOH to promote a guide for the closing of beaches located within the protected area of Mamaroneck Harbor, the open water of Coveleigh and Davenport Neck in New Rochelle.
- Greater than 1/2 inch of rain = 1 day closure
- Greater than 1 inch of rain = 2 day closure
- Greater than 2 inches of rain = to be determined
If you plan on going to Coveleigh or other nearby beaches after a rainfall, check to make sure they are open by calling the beach.
