Longtime Rye resident Dr. Joy Reidenberg has carved out a unique and nationally recognized career at the intersection of high-level biomedical research, marine biology, and public science education. Known to millions around the globe for her television appearances on PBS, BBC, NatGeo Wild, and Discovery, Reidenberg brings complex biological concepts to life by dissecting and analyzing some of the planet’s largest and most intriguing creatures. 

Academic Career and Breakthrough Research

Dr. Reidenberg earned her Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in 1983. She then pursued graduate training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, earning her Master of Philosophy from the Graduate Program in Biological Sciences in 1985 and her Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences: Anatomy in 1988.

Today, she serves as a Full Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, with appointments in the Center for Anatomy and Functional Morphology and the Department of Medical Education. Over the course of her academic career, she has also held appointments as a Guest Investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and as an Associate Scientist at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.

Reidenberg’s primary scientific focus centers on comparative anatomy, with a special emphasis on marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Her lab studies how aquatic animals adapt to environmental extremes—such as generating underwater vocalizations without losing air, withstanding immense deep-sea pressures, and preventing decompression sickness. By studying these species as “natural experiments,” Reidenberg seeks to apply nature’s evolutionary solutions to human medical challenges, aiming to inspire new protective technologies, surgical techniques, and treatments for human diseases.

Her research has earned federal funding from major organizations, including the Office of Naval Research, the Department of Defense, the National Oceanic Partnership Program, and NOAA.

Television, Media, and Public Science Outreach

While medical students know her as a master teacher of human gross anatomy, embryology, and histology, the general public best recognizes Dr. Reidenberg from her extensive television work.

Her media career launched in 2009 when a UK production team invited her to Ireland on short notice to conduct a field dissection of a stranded 65-foot fin whale. Her exceptional skill in navigating giant anatomical structures on camera led to her becoming a primary scientist on the BAFTA-winning documentary series Inside Nature’s Giants (airing on Channel 4 and PBS), where she featured in 18 episodes examining species ranging from lions and giant squids to elephants and sperm whales.

Reidenberg later starred in the four-part PBS and BBC series Sex in the Wild, co-hosted the live multi-platform event Big Blue Live in Monterey Bay, California, and participated in high-profile international research events, including a historic 2024 dissection of a rare spade-toothed whale in New Zealand.

Teaching Awards and Honors

Dr. Reidenberg’s contributions to research and science communication have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. She received the Basmajian Award from the American Association of Anatomists for excellence in both teaching and research, and was honored with the Henry Gray Distinguished Educator Award—the highest international teaching accolade in the field of anatomy. She has also received the Jacobi Medallion and the Mount Sinai Alumni Award for Achievement in Graduate Education.
