The Rye Boys Soccer team earned a shutout victory in their season opener on Wednesday, September 2, as the defeated Sleepy Hollow 3-0. The Garnets scored all three of their goals after the halftime break to earn a home win and start the 2026 campaign at 1-0.
“We dealt with some significant challenges, and I think the players and coaches did a nice job of assessing the situation at halftime and approaching the second half with renewed purpose and confidence,” Head Coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “I was particularly pleased with our attention to defending and repressing, and I think anytime you put up a clean sheet there is a lot to be proud of.”
Sleepy Hollow did a nice job slowing the pace of play in the first 40 minutes, in which both teams committed several fouls. An early injury to Alec Dodge Terra also zapped some momentum from the crowd.
Finally, Kasen Scarperi broke the ice in the 45th minute with a long-range bullet off his left foot, which opened the floodgates for the Garnets. The veteran co-captain served up an assist to Connor Dehmer in the 63rd minute, and Gabriel Chared-Sandstrom scored his first career goal after a few deflections off a corner kick to extend the lead to 3-0. Felix Wismer made an impact on the latter two tallies, drawing a foul on one and taking the fruitful corner kick on the other.
“While we felt like we left some goals out there, I was also extremely excited by the quality of the three we scored,” Small said. “A brilliant individual effort from Kasen on the first, and then two set pieces right off the training ground.”
The head coach also highlighted defenders Harrison Zimmer and Filip Glitterstam for locking down the back line in the shutout victory. Sleepy Hollow ended the match with zero shots on goal.
Rye (1-0) plays their next regular season game on Tuesday, September 8, as they host Harrison. The Huskies are coming off a New York State semifinals appearance in Class AA last year. The contest begins at 5:00pm and can be viewed here. Watch the win over Sleepy Hollow here.
