The Rye Girls Tennis team narrowly earned their third straight win to open the 2026 season on Tuesday, September 15, as they eked past Mamaroneck 4-3. The Garnets and Tigers were tied a 3-3 with just second singles left to play, which Rye won after a marathon supertiebreaker.
Rye Middle School 8th grader Avalina DiMeo sealed the victory by winning at second singles, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, (10-8). Her matchup lasted more than three hours. Despite falling in set two, DiMeo won almost all the important points, including outscoring her foe 17-9 across the two tiebreakers.
On the opposite end of the stress scale, top singles weapon Iciar Garate stayed personally undefeated with a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Her combination of steady serving and elite defense allowed her to stay in control in almost every single game, like most matches she plays.
Rye (3-0) will search for their fourth win in a row in a challenging matchup with Scarsdale on Thursday, September 17. The Garnets travel to the Raiders for a road match scheduled for 4:30pm.
