The Rye Boys Soccer team secured their fourth straight win to open the season on Wednesday, September 16, as they shutout Keio Academy 4-0. The Garnets defended hard and have yet to allow a goal against through their four contests to date.
“Keio presented us with some novel challenges, defending in a fairly well organized low block,” head coach Jared Small reflected after the game. “But I loved our patience, and we did an effective job switching the point of attack and taking a variety of approaches to try to break them down.”
Rye took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to an early strike from Gabriel Chared-Sandstrom, whose first goal of the year deflected into the cage off a Keio defender. The senior forward complemented his first goal of the season with an assist on the second to Kasen Scarperi. Scarperi’s tally set in motion a three-goal second half for the Garnets.
After sophomore Connor Dehmer extended the lead to three, Keegan O’Brien slotted his first career varsity goal in the 80th and final minute. “Keegan has really improved his defending and back-pressing, and the result is that he’s generating opportunities for his teammates and putting himself in position for great things to happen,” Small told MyRye.com. “His goal was a deserved reward for that effort.”
The bench boss also complimented the efforts of his defensive line – Filip Glitterstam, Cole Furber, and Christian Hofmann – for helping lead the way in the clean sheet. Rye has now won all four of their games by more than three goals and have yet to cede any.
The Garnets (4-0) have one day off before their next gameday on Friday, September 18. Rye travels to Suffern to visit the Mounties for a 5:00pm start to kick off their weekend. Watch it here.
