The Rye Boys Soccer team just completed one of the most dominant regular seasons possible.

The Garnets handled business on senior night against Edgemont on Monday, October 19, as they defended Nugent Stadium to the tune of a 5-0 win. The victory secures an unbeaten regular season for Jared Small and his group, who will enter the sectional tournament as the #1 seed.

“Tonight felt like a celebration of all the work the players put in this season,” Rye assistant coach and professional player Conor McGlynn said after the game. “We accomplished our goals of thanking our amazing senior class, ending the regular season undefeated, and setting the tone for the playoffs.”

Rye scored two goals right away to jump in front and leave no doubt of the result of their regular season finale. Senior Alec Dodge Terra assisted on the first – the 16th of the season from Connor Dehmer – before scoring his own on a set piece to open his account. Both teams generated a few chances, but the score remained 2-0 until after halftime.

Rye’s final three goals also came in a bunch in the 61st through 68th minutes. Kasen Scarperi buried two more, bringing his season goal total to 18, before Felix Wismer finished a gorgeous passing play with his left foot.

“Our two co-captains deserve so much credit for how they have represented Rye throughout the season,” McGlynn said. “Peter Wilmot and Kasen Scarperi have been a pleasure to coach and have driven the standards on and off the pitch for the rest of the group.”

Scarperi’s goal scoring with Wilmot’s relentless defending is seemingly always part of a winning formula for Rye, who finish the regular season 15-0-1 despite playing the hardest strength of schedule in all of Section 1.

Rye will turn their focus to the postseason, where they are in line to host two games. Round one is likely to kick off on Friday, October 23. The Garnets, who lead Section 1 in goals for (61) and goal differential (+54), are looking to reach the State finals for the second year in a row.

“We had a remarkable regular season and we are proud of the fact that we did it against such a formidable set of opponents,” head coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “The reality, however, is that tonight marked the end of one season and tomorrow begins a new season that we hope will last 27 days and include eight matches.”
