The Rye Boys Soccer team extended their season-long winning streak to 14 games on Monday, October 12, as they downed Class AA foe Cornwall 3-1. The Garnets also defeated Pelham on Saturday, October 10, also by the score of 3-1. Rye is now a perfect 14-0 on the year.

Win vs Pelham

“We had some moments of inventing attacking play, particularly in the first half, and many stretches of defensive grinding,” head coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “There were a lot of positives to take from this one, especially against a side who knows us well and has only lost to one opponent besides us this year.”

Rye ceded the first goal of the match in the sixth minute before responding in the 10th thanks to a goal from Connor Dehmer. The sophomore would add two more within 15 minutes for the rapid-fire natural hat trick.

“As has been the theme this season, we received strong performances from some of our usual suspects and some equally valuable contributions from players who don’t always receive the spotlight,” Small continued. “James Hayashi and Mack Keenan both covered a lot of ground on the wings in replacement of Harrison Zimmer, who was right there on the sideline coaching these guys the entire match.  Along the backline, Silas Kavanagh, CJ Loizeaux, Carter Hudspeth, and James Furber all helped limit the opposition to few quality chances.”

Rye moved to 13-0 with the come-from-behind win after a slow second half in which neither team found much of an offensive rhythm. The Garnets had no problem with that en route to their eleventh multi-goal victory of the season and second in such fashion over the Pelicans.

Win vs Cornwall

“This was a complete performance from the lads,” Small told MyRye.com. “While not always beautiful, there is a lot to be proud about when you leave Orange County with a 3-1 win over a perennial Class AA state tournament qualifier. We scored in a variety of ways and we defended purposefully.”

Dehmer scored his fourth consecutive goal in the 10th minute after a bit of a broken play via a contested ball found its way on his feet. Defender Cole Furber delivered on a free kick in the second half to double the lead after his powerful strike caught both posts before ricocheting into the net. Felix Wismer added another before Cornwall could cut the deficit back down to two.

“We’ve loved the way goalkeeper Will Alexander has played these past few matches – his positioning off his line exudes confidence, and he’s been very consistent in claiming balls out of the air,” Small said. “The coaches were equally excited to see Trent Roseberry deputize for Alexander during the final 16 minutes. Trent trains hard every day, supports Will wholeheartedly, and has now put in three strong performances for us since October 2. He has proven ready for the moment each time.”

Just as impactful as the high-flying Rye offense is their defense and goaltending, which limited two strong opponents to just two total goals in their previous two contests. The Garnets have allowed more than one goal just once through their fourteen wins (compared to scoring 2+ goals in 13 of those 14).

Small and his club will take their perfect record into Wednesday, October 14, when they visit Mahopac for a 5:00pm road match.
