The Rye Boys Soccer team locked up their ninth straight win to open the season on Wednesday, September 30, as they defeated Somers 5-0. The Garnets let the Tuskers hang around in a wide open first half, but played with better structure in the second to finish an undefeated month of September.
“Our 2-0 halftime lead was precarious, to say the least,” head coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “While the scoreboard told one story, our group knew that we needed to get more compact and stuck in in our defending. That’s exact what we accomplished, and the three second half goals were a just reward for our efforts.”
Kasen Scarperi scored his 9th goal of the season to give Rye the early lead, and Connor Dehmer doubled the lead with his 8th in the 21st minute. Despite the lead, the chance ledger hardly favored the Garnets, if at all, after 40 minutes.
“For many reasons, we needed to find a few guys who could step into the moment against a high energy, hard pressing opponent. The coaching staff was thrilled to see Filip [Glitterstam] dominate the midfield in the second half, and we were also really excited to see Sam Collins open his varsity account after notching 18 goals for the JV squad last year.”
Glitterstam and Collins both opened their varisty accounts in the second half. Glitterstam, a veteran defender-turned-midfielder, scored his first two career varsity goals. Collins, coming off an 18-goal season on JV last fall, netted his first varsity goal as well, a product of his strong work thus far this season.
“Sam has done so many things well this season – he gets the details right, and today we saw him account for two goals,” Small told MyRye.com. “The first one he scored by throwing his body from the ground towards the ball, and the second was in the form of a massive blocked shot in which he flung himself in front of a Somers strike that had eyes for the goal.”
The strong offensive and defensive effort from Glitterstam, Collins, Peter Wilmot, and the rest of the Garnets capped off their 9-0 month of September. They will take that impressive record into their next game on Friday, October 2, at 5:30pm at Edgemont.
