The Rye Football team fell short in their rivalry game against Somers on Friday, October 2, as they fell to the Tuskers 31-13. Rye stayed close with Somers through a defensively-fraught first half, but did not have the firepower to forge a comeback in a game they never led.
“I was real proud of the way Shoemaker ran the offense under a tremendous amount of pressure,” head coach Dino Garr told MyRye.com after the defeat. “I thought we showed some good signs of coming together, but we have to improve our tackling.”
Sophomore Johnny Shoemaker, who is expected to maintain the starting role in the wake of Charlie Brady’s season-ending injury last week, helped lead two scoring drives in a difficult environment. Ryan Hess had a strong game as well, catching two key passes from Shoemaker.
Rye wanted to establish the run game, but that is tough to do when trailing. The Tuskers returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, putting the Garnets behind the eight-ball instantly. Rye never recovered from falling behind by a touchdown before the first play from scrimmage.
Rye (3-2) will look to get back on track against Nyack next Friday, October 9. Kickoff at Nugent Stadium is scheduled for 7:00pm, with Harrison looming beyond the Redhawks.
