The Rye Girls Tennis team won four medals at the Georgia Williams memorial tournament on Saturday, October 3, including three in the doubles format. The event, originally scheduled for the end of September, involves Rye, Edgemont, Scarsdale, and the host Nyack, and is designed to raise money for a cause that goes well beyond the baseline.

“Nyack Coach Josh Weinman, who grew up in Rye, started this memorial tournament for the schloarship fund in the name of a dear colleague, Georgia Williams who died after a battle with cancer,” head coach Tony Campbell told MyRye.com. “Four schools participate in a fun day of round robin tennis, good food, and prizes. The spirit of the day is to commemorate Georgia and give the girls a fun day of light, pressure-free competition.”

The matches follow an atypical format, where girls play in a one-set round robin against each other. Rye performed very well, highlighted by eighth grader Avalino DiMeo’s medal at first singles. The Garnets also took home four medals in doubles: juniors Natalie Hofmann and Sofia Echlov in second doubles, juniors Reese McGill and Caroline May in third doubles, and senior Rosie Zicherman and eighth grader Rosie DeFife at fourth doubles.

“All the girls from all the schools were lovely competitors,” Campbell said.

Rye (5-4) takes the court next for a home scrimmage against Nyack on Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30pm.
