For the fourth time in a row, the Rye Girls Soccer team reigns supreme over Section 1 Class A.
The top-seeded Garnets knocked off 10th-seeded Somers in the championship game on Sunday, November 1, as they scored twice in the second half to win 2-0. The Garnets reached the top of the sectional without allowing a goal against for the second year in a row.
In a scoreless first half, it was the underdog Tuskers who actually came closest to striking. A whistle for a foul blew just seconds before a corner kick found the back of the Garnets’ net. The foul on Somers prevented them from taking the lead and putting Rye behind the eight ball for the first time all postseason.
Sophomore Harkin Brown, a star on Rye’s eventual state championship team as just a freshman last year, played hero for the Garnets in the second half. She scored both goals, the first on a fast break and the second on a one-touch from a Charlotte Keenan set-up. As usual, the Rye defense locked down the lead, with strong play coming from Julia Carballo, Hannah Jachman, Ella Fleckten, and others.
Rye (18-0-2, 4-0 postseason) will take a flawless resume into the regional semifinals on Wednesday, November 4. The Garnets will face the Section 9 champion-Mount Academy at 4:00pm at Nyack High School. As it has been for the last four games, every game continues to be an elimination game for both Rye and their opponents.
