"Football: Rye asserts dominance in second half of another romp over Harrison

HARRISON – For Declan Lavelle and many of the players and coaches on Rye's sideline, the feeling was familiar. They were the favorites, the better team with the better record, but Harrison channeled the passion unique to Westchester's most storied football rivalry and used it to narrow the talent gap.

Again on Saturday, Rye found itself locked in a tied game, knowing the Huskies had dictated the play too often through the first two quarters. But past experience had taught Lavelle and the Garnets to remain patient.

"I really think it was just our level of play," the senior quarterback said. "At halftime we brought everyone together and said that to win this game we were going to have to raise the bar and play a lot better. And we did that."

Rye regrouped and made a resounding second-half statement. The Garnets scored 28 unanswered points to assert themselves in a 41-13 victory at Harrison that 91st playing of "The Game."

The victory gave Rye 18 wins in the last 19 meetings and a 46-42-3 lead in the all-time series.

"We had to take the blow," coach Dino Garr said. "We said, 'Listen, you're coming into enemy territory. You have to be able to take it and believe in the consistency of what you're doing.' They're great players and they've really bought into what we're doing.'"

Lavelle had a hand in three touchdowns. Sophomore Caden Whaling rushed for 142 yards and two more touchdowns, including a 59-yarder to stretch the lead in the second half."
